>> Carving Cup Race on March 14, 2010 - by Pavel

The first time in California: Carving Cup Racing
Sierra League and Northstar are introducing Carving Cup as a new and fun racing format on March 14.
$10 race fee covers a practice run and two race runs. Free for Sierra League race pass holders.
The race is open to the general public. Registration in the Village until 9am and on the hill until 10am. Those, who register on the hill start will be at the end of the list.

The course is set with buoys instead of gates with 3 buoys in every turn. In each turn you decide which buoy to ski around. Blue is usually is an inside one. Red is outside, which makes you ski wider. Yellow is in between. Making a turn around further buoy gives more points. The winner has the smallest ratio of time divided by total points. If you ski wider, it takes longer, but gives more points.
The best of the two runs counts.

Skiers and snowboarders are welcome and race in the same classes.
Kids under 17 are welcome if they drag their parents to race too.
The course should be easy for all levels and there is no excuse not to race if your child wants to.

Bring your slalom or just carving skis or carving/slalom snowboard.
No poles allowed.
No speed suits - regular skiing/riding clothes.
No slalom protective gear needed.
Helmets are required as in all events these days.

It should be fun!!!

>> President's message - by Jo

The snow is plentiful, and the skiing is great! The Sierra League welcomes racers of all abilities and ages. Kids race free when a parent is racing. Our 2010 race schedule is posted online. Our early season Carving Cup race had to be rescheduled because of too much snow, not a bad problem to have!

We are holding six of our eight regular season races in conjunction with the Bay Area Council Singles League. Using the same courses will provide cost savings for both leagues. We also will offer a separate course for S8-9-10 racers, which hopefully will help us recruit more beginning racers.

The success of Sierra programs depends on our clubs and members. Please contact me or any board member with your ideas and thoughts.

Best wishes and good skiing for the season. We look forward to seeing you on the slopes and on the race course. Please call with any questions you may have about the Sierra Council or racing with Sierra League: 775-787-7556 home, 775-722-6468 cell, or email jo_simpson@sbcglobal.net.
